I walked into one of the storage rooms in the basement of the building that was currently being used as a holding cell.

Illegally.

“Colin and Emma, right?” I asked as I glanced over the two terrified teens… Who were growling at me in warning. “I know you’re scared, but I’m on your side.” Their wolves were almost out of control, so I didn’t take offense.

The guy seemed to snap out of his wolf and surface as a person first. “Oh, so you’re the fucking good cop to all their bad cop bullshit?”

“Watch your mouth and—”

I held up a hand to Axel and he instantly shut it. “I’m the one who just saved your asses by arresting that monster.” I nodded when he blinked at me, Emma pushing her wolf down some too when she heard that. “I will get you guys out of here.” I waved their files at them. “This is all bullshit.”

“Fine, we can go then,” she whispered, glancing towards the door.

I shook my head. “It’s not that simple and you know it. I’m sorry, but you’re wolves now.”

“This is why you wanted Tanner gone,” Axel whispered, swearing when he felt the answer from me. “Sera, if the council finds out you didn’t turn these kids over to them or whatever pack infected them, you’re going to be in deep shit.”

“The council can currently bite me,” I drawled. I sighed when the kids got scared again. “Those are the rules—the laws that I am supposed to follow as FBI.” I waited for that to settle with them. “However, I am also the Alpha of the Chicago pack.”

“I know,” Emma muttered. “We were thinking of coming to you but…”

“You were scared I wasn’t what I seemed because there are so many rumors about me. I get it.” I shrugged when the guy seemed surprised by that, focusing on Emma. “You know how that works as a woman.” I waited until she nodded. “Let’s start at the beginning before I lay out your options. Who infected you?”

“He didn’t give us a fucking business card,” Colin sneered. “We told them where in Nebraska.”

I sighed and tapped the files against my leg. “I assume everything I’ve read is bullshit, so give me your story. I have piles of other people to help. I came to you both first, so work with me if you want the best option.”

“We were on the way back from our senior trip to Omaha,” she blurted. “A three-day trip that’s the zoo and a few other things. A snowstorm came in bad but was supposed to pass, so the buses all pulled into a bigger rest stop. We snuck away to make out. No big. We weren’t the only ones. Next thing I know a wolf darts out and bites me, bites Colin when he tried to help.”

Colin took over when she got choked up, hugging her to him. “The bites healed fast, and by the time we got to the hospital, we were healed. Luckily, our teacher knew what that meant and didn’t take us inside to get on the record.
